Need help with buying 2005 Ford Escape, question on dashboard gauges

I need a small four wheel drive to get me through the rest of the winter. I'm looking at a 2005 Ford Escape at a used car dealer. The left of two round gauges on the dashboard says FUEL ECON and was running between 3 and 4.9 miles when I test drove the car. What does this mean? I know some people have gauges that say how many miles per gallon they are getting. I certainly hope this isn't the case! Anyone own an older Escape on the board today?
