Need feedback to help with decision: (refurbished) iMAC vs MacBook Pro 17inch

I am so wanting to take steps to change to MAC products. I have the 4S iPhone and the original iPad (love both). My home computer is a 17 inch HP which is coming up on 4.5 yrs - still works but getting slower and the battery apparently is now starting to age. I love having a 17 inch laptop but have been advised to go with the iMAC with an upgrade to a newer iPAD. The refurbished 17 inch MacBooks are dwindling in availability and I also want products that still have a CD/DVD drive which Apple seems to be moving away from. The down side of the laptop for me is the price - and it seems that I can can both the iMAC and iPAD for the price of the laptop. I'm interested in hearing from Apple fans who have these devices and how they are working out for you. Thanks in advance.
