Need Suggestions for a 'GREAT' Wireless Router

My brother-in-law hooked up a Cisco wireless router for me. I got it at Walmart. It costs about $60. He told me they were all about the same. I can not get my laptop to receive the signal only a matter of 20 feet away. I live in a 2 story, 2600 sq. foot house. The router is pretty worthless to me as far as my laptop goes. Can anyone recommend a GOOD STRONG router that will give service to my laptop? By the way, I am on a satellite signal for the internet, if that makes any difference.
