Need Help with iTunes

Can anyone here help me with some iTune syncing issues? I have an "ipod" that when connected to my computer shows up as a Gxt I believe, anyway, iTunes doesn't recognize it as a device the "sync to iTunes" function in the iTunes window on the left is not available however, Windows Media Player automatically recognizes it as a device so I have been having to burn a disc from iTunes then Rip it to WMedia Player then sync it to the ipod - seems like a huge bunch of steps that shouldn't be necessary. I have gone into control panel and looked for any issues. I have opened up my computer and tried to work it from "open" that doesn't work. I thought iTunes was supposed to be very easy and sync to any ipod device. I tried to sync my ipod shuffle to transfer to it and then do the ipod to ipod transfer but iTunes wants to erase all items on the shuffle in order to allow the sync.

any suggestions??
