Need Help Installing Sound Drivers

On the toolbar, the sound icon has an X through it because the sound drivers are gone. Accidently uninstalled the sound part. Went to the manufacture's website and followed the directions to install and nothing happened. Still can't get any sound. There is a place on the computer that you can see three levels of sound and adjust it. I went to different help pages about this and the directions didn't help. What's the next step?
