Motorola problem sms and mms

Suddenly I canot send a photo with a text message.  The messages go through as SMS but the pics get a MMS tag and will not go through.  I have restarted my phone, checked the settings, checked my data (lots!)  but still not working.  This is very frustrating cause I don't know WHY this suddenly occurred. Any tips on how to fix this?

My AT&T Prepaid Phone works the same way.  Any message with a photo is billed as an MMS.  I think messages greater than 160 characters are also MMS.  I have an old plan, don't think it's even offered by AT&T any more.  If I used it more, I'd upgrade.

My android phone went through an upgrade, and after that I could no longer attach a photo to a text message.

 

To send both together, I had to start at the photo and choose "share,"  and then "message."
