Microsoft Security Essentials real-time protection

Is there a way to keep the real time protection turned on? I notice every time I turn the computer back on the protection is turned off. I did not realize it was off until I clicked on it to do a scan...and now I check every time I restart. But is there a setting I am missing so that when I start up it will automatically load? I would appreciate all replies, as I have not had experience with this. Before I have used McAfee, Norton, or Kaspersky, but they all were on automatically, and I am totally confused with MSE. TIA
