Microsoft Home, Office & Student 2010

Purchased my new computer about 4 years ago.  The new one doesn't have office so if i need to keep something I put it in my email in a folder.  Was just thinking maybe I can download my MS Word 2010, I do have the disc that came with my old computer.  Has anyone done this or would you download a free program like Open Office.  Don't want to mess my computer up with something so old.  Just want something I can write on in a safe place.  Any suggestions. I've done a search and it says it's possible but sometimes it's better not to try.

Another question.  My old computer still turns on but I can't get the mouse to work so can't access anything on it.  I've tried my laser mouse and that won't work either.    Tried a third one too and that won't work.  The old one is slower but still worked fine before the mouse problem.  Any suggestions on this?

Thanks.

@kismet   Maybe your mouse needs a new battery (?)

Not the battery.  Changed that.  I used the plug in one also that came with my old desk computer.  I think it may be in my device manager.  Since it has Vista in it I just decided to get a new one.  Love my new Dell.

Tangocash,  I had a mouse like that and for some reason it caused a problem with my thumb.  Actually my husband had it on his work computer and told me to try it.  Just went and bought a laser one which worked better for me.

I did go on ebay and saw the program.  Are most downloads sent or do you get a dvd?  I imagine if there is no shipping it would come in the form of an email?

Open Office is a safe program. I would download it direct from the Open Office.org site. It can be called Apache Open Office. Your Windows software will download the right version.

This product has been around for 17 years. You may want to read about it on Wikipedia.

Please stop using your old computer. Microsoft stop supporting Windows 7 in January 2020.

I thought I could never get along w/o Office and outlook

but there's other stuff out there

I use gmail. (granted there are features in outlook that I miss) and I use Google sheets and the other things

I can't speak to Open Office

@jackthebear

I write most of my mail these days in an Comcast Xfinity app.  I use Comcast's online mail, and have a  Gmail account.

There is no substitute for Outlook. Comcast online has some of the power tools, but not all.

Google Docs is what I use. You can use Google Docs to open and edit Microsoft Word documents. You can even download your Google doc as a Word document so it has a standard Word extension

@ciao_bella

Google Docs is a very good tool, which has to be used online. The program lives on Google cloud.

Microsoft Office and Open Office can reside on your computer.
