If you have a 32GB memory card in a tom tom GPS, take it out and put it in a new GPS Tom TOM will it then be blank or will it put in the maps of the first tom tom? Do I have to buy a new memory card for the new GPS?

Call the GPS manufacturer & ask them.

The contents of the memory card will stay on the memory card and be viewable on the second device as long as the formatting of the contents is compatible between the 2 devices.
Lets say the map material on tomtom1 is in format A, a format specifically used by tomtom1. If tomtom2 gets the same card inserted and has the ability to read/view any content in Format A, then tomtom2 will have exactly the same ability to use the maps or memory card material as tomtom1.
There should be transparency between the two devices unless one is so old that it processes way different than the newer one. If tomtom2 is only compatible with Format B or Format C and onward , then you will realize tomtom2 cannot read material from tomtom1.
Overall, it is way more likely the memory card will be totally useful in the second device. In general, gps units and many other electronics develop new features as the new models come out but are still backwards compatible so there is less wasted media.
You are very likely to be happily gratified to realize the memory card will transfer or reuse its contents across both devices. I’d estimate my confidence in my advice to be 95%. I have lots of experience using gps devices with various cards knowing that format is the critical issue.
Stick the old card in the new device with confidence.

I don't know if maps are transferable. As posted, call customer service or do a search online and see what you find.

I agree. I would assume it will be like any other device. If it's compatible formatting, it will be able to read the files. If not, I would assume it will ask if you want to format the memory card (which will overwrite the files on the card, which obviously includes the maps).

Think I"ll take this ************ TomTom back. I"ve been sitting here since 1 trying to update this new unit and after you go thru hrs. of just 15 min left to full charge it will tell you 'no maps found' and then go back to 1% and 1 hr and 15 min left to charge.
Already had an account with them with the first Tom so all I had to do was 'add a device' give that one a name and upload the North America map.
After hrs. of making sure the pc didn't go to sleep I put hubbo in charge of it while I went to the bathroom and put dinner on, we're taking turns making sure the pc doesn't go to sleep if it does it stops the downloading and you have to start from scratch.
I'm gonna try the Garmin brand take this one back. I noticed Q doesn't sell them any more

GPS units, digital point and shoot cameras, camcorders, audio recorders, MP3 players, etc. are all becoming extinct due to smartphones that have the same capabilities as those devices in a single unit. The companies that make those individual units will find themselves in all kinds of financial trouble as more and more people move to smartphones.
We've seen the audio CD market largely disappear, and we're seeing that with DVD's now also as more people buy the digital version of movies. CD players are all but gone from the market. DVD players are not the hot item they were just a few years ago.
Smartphones have become pretty much everything you need in one little package and some are so affordable that it's hard to justify the cost and inconvenience of individual items.

@SharkE I would think that if you have a new Tom Tom you would not need whats on an old card. I put my cards in my laptop and wipe them out before I put them in a new device. Good Luck!

I will only say that I have only owned one TomTom, and I ditched it very quickly. I felt it was inaccurate and very clunky at directions. It’s been Garmin all the way for me since then.
I have also stopped caring whether the maps are upgradable for life. Even when I had a powerful laptop and extremely fast internet (which I no longer have access to), it would take hours and hours to upload new maps, abort, retry, etc. It just isn’t worth it in frustration to me.
The prices have come down enough that I just buy a new one that suits my purposes (not the most expensive) about every 4-5 years and I’m fine with that.
