Problem solved by Apple Support. Malware detected on the computer. Installed and ran Malware Bytes. Problem solved. Hallelujah!!!

PS, Apple Store and Apple Support both told me to take back the adaptor for a full refund.

It's also a good reminder for the many Mac users who think they're immune from malware/viruses. More and more malware creators are now targeting the Apple ecosystem.
