In general, I'd try a different cable and a different port on the computer in case the issue is with the cable or port. If those don't work, check for upgrades on the e-reader software. Trying the e-reader on a friend's/neighbor's computer to be sure the issue isn't with the port on the e-reader might narrow the possible list of culprits. It could be a port failure on the e-reader.
A computer that's connected to an e-reader should recognize it in some manner. If it's not, then there's a failure to communicate and that would imply one of the ports (computer or e-reader) or the cable. It could be purely software related, but if that's the case there's not a lot you can do until the software gets fixed. If it is a port or cable issue you have more options.

@Lilysmom1 It would help if you indicated which software as well as which ereader. There are many of both. ![]()
If the update was an OS, did you check to see if the ereader was compatible and/or needed updating too?
Or the solution could be as simple as running Disk Utility>First Aid & restarting your comp afterwards. Most of the time doing this after updating and/or upgrading cures the hiccup issues that arises when updating or upgrading software or the system.

@jackthebear @gardenman @Reilley @Mz iMac @FranandZoe thank you for the feedback.
I am in Canada using Kobo Aura H20. The software on MacBook Pro is Monterey (will confirm, I think that is the latest). I have tried different USB ports and connecting cords. I have never had an issue until now connecting this Ereader. I have updated Ereader software. I am suspicious that this happened after I updated software on MacBook Pro.
The one thing I have not tried is connecting the Ereader to another computer.. I will do that next.
I looked in Apple Forums with no success. I will contact Apple support as well. In the meantime, I am using my iPad. You might not hear back from me on this for a couple of weeks as I am travelling. @jackthebear , Inwill look at YouTube as well. My Kobo is.not so old it is no longer supported by software updates.
I appreciate the feedback. I prefer my Ereader but can get along for now without. LM

Are your trying to charge the e-reader? If so, have you tried to charge the e-reader using a cord in an electric outlet? Are you trying to download a book using your computer?

@Lilysmom1Thank you for the additional info.
"The software on MacBook Pro is Monterey (will confirm, I think that is the latest). "
The latest OS (as of 2/27) is Ventura 13.2.1
"I have updated Ereader software. I am suspicious that this happened after I updated software on MacBook Pro."
Kobo Aura H20 is 3rd party hardware. You need to contact the manufacturer/vendor to determine if its compatible w/Monterey or later if that is the OS currently on your MBP. If so, ask their tech support for help.
In the meantime.....
Enjoy your travels!
