Mac vs. PC

The hard drive in my Dell has crashed once again (2nd time in about 5 years). I couldn't make up my mind between a Dell or HP than the other day I stopped in at Best Buy and the guy there really was trying to get me to buy an Apple (I want a desktop). Any opinions - I'm not very computer savvy and would only use it for a little word processing, emails, surfing, pictures that kind of stuff.

Are there are cons on buying an Apple? How hard are they to learn and will I be able to transfer pictures and some things on Word over?
