I think my 7-year-old Toshiba laptop has seen better days.
Most recently, I have had an issue installing new Windows updates. The entire process simply stalls - doesn't go anywhere. I went to a Malware Help Forum where they have expert volunteers run you through lots of diagnostics. I did this once before when I was infected with a Google Redirect virus and the Help Forum was terrific. Sadly, this time, they couldn't resolve the problem. In addition, I cannot format discs in my D: drive. It just fails.
So, I'm off to Best Buy probably tomorrow. They actually have a couple of Windows 7 laptops available. I have my eye on an Acer 15.6". It has an Intel Pentium processor, which will be better than my Intel Celeron.
I don't do much on my computer -- not a high-volume user.
So.....
If anyone has a suggestion for my current issues, I'd appreciate your input. Also, any suggestions regarding a new laptop for a low-volume user are welcomed.

I have a 4 yo and 9 yo Toshiba Satellite. Both going strong. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Toshiba. Both used for business. ,

Thanks, @Dawniee. I have been extremely pleased with my Toshiba, but I checked their site and they only seem to offer higher-volume computers mostly for business purposes. Mine is only for personal use. Maybe I missed something and should re-check

Do you a have a restore point? Or if you go restore system settings, you might be able to recover your computer and still save info. I did have to evetually buy a new computer. However, I was able to make the old one last for a few months until I did research. Good Luck!

@fuzzball76, Windows updates were installed without issue on 5/11, so this is a very recent problem. The next set of updates could not be installed. So, you're talking about bringing my computer back to a date prior to 5/11? I've never done anything like that and would be concerned I'd screw it up. I was thinking of taking my computer to the Geek Squad to do this, but it would probably cost me enough to warrant a new computer altogether.
My computer works just fine, though. In fact, it runs even better than it did a couple of weeks ago because of all the diagnostics the help forum had me run. Really cleaned it out. While my computer works fine, the problem is...without the ability to install Windows updates, I am open to malware and other nefarious things. :-(

I have restored my older Toshiba to a restore point a few times!
Best Buy has quite a few on clearance starting at 340. Yours is too old for Geek Squad costs.
Try to restore, if doesn't work, have a new model in mind. Just a thought!
My 4 yo has a touch screen. I didn't think I would use it but I do. I think I paid around 500 on sale.

That's so cute! :-)
I'm reading up on Restore Points right now. I also put the question to my Helper in the Malware Forum. I don't recall him even bringing that up during this past week's work with my computer -- must be a reason. ??
There are several new (good enough for my purposes) computers that I can get for $325-400.

I have a Toshiba laptop and must have gotten a lemon. It's about 6 years old now and I had trouble with it in the first year I had it. I would never buy another Toshiba again. I'm also looking to replace it but I don't know what I want. I have had an HP computer before that I loved. I will probably buy that or maybe a MacBook Air or Pro (if I decide to spend that much)

We use system restore a lot around here!
It backdates yet does not delete crucial files.

Until I updated to Win 10, updating often got stuck on my computer. If you have access to another computer, there is a lot of info on what to do and which updates to avoid. I learned to not update automatically, but to check which ones I wanted. The updates that gave me fits sometimes were the 32 bit ones, when I have a 64. Good luck.
