I also have a small HP laser printer. It is about 12 years old and does not even have an on and off switch. I could not make copies or scan a document. It cost $250 and a new one today might be the same. HP has provided drivers for 12 years, and you pay for this support.
when you say the hp provides 'drivers', are you referring to software drivers (that you install) that may be needed for a different version of windows that doesn't recognize the printer? if so, those are free and have been since forever.

I usually change printers, because, of a new computer or a need for better technology .
I have used laser printers and ink jets side by side for many years.
Laser printers are great in a business environment where you are just printing documents, envelopes and labels.
I like having my page with a touch of color.
if you don't print a lot, it probably doesn't matter which type of printer.
i remember back in the day, i worked for a company that had both types of printers.
i didn't know that there was such a difference in terms of how much would fit on a 8.5 x 11 page.
naturally, the reports i created for another department worked fine on my laser jet. when i sent them to the departments ink jet, it was a completing different thing! they looked terrible, things got cut off and the text was blurry.
at least back then, ink jets had some wacky built in margin thing that restricted how close to the edge of the page you could print.
needless to say, i ordered that department a laser jet printer immediately. they were more happy about the printer then the reports that i had created for them, as they could not justify why they needed a laser jet printer. i just reminded them that not all people in IT are incompetent. LOL

Yes, HP provides these free to customers.
I have had to donate or recycle many peripherals, because I couldn't get a new Window driver or software.
I still believe customers pay for quality products and tech support. It is cooked in the price.

A printer can be a complex device for some people to setup. This is the reason for many negative reviews.
There are excellent unboxing and setup videos on YouTube.
I would look for the model in this series with the best reviews.

I have an old HP laser printer.... at least 10 years old. I just use Black and white...no color.
I buy my ink cartridge from a knockoff site for about $20 rather than paying $80 plus dollars that HP charges for theirs. The knock cartridges work great!
