Is this machine available???

I want to get some old shows off my DirecTV DVR, as it's running out of space. Can I purchase a machine that will let me play these old shows from the DVR/tv and then record them on DVDs so I can play them back on my DVD player? I think I'm saying all this correctly, but you get the gist. I think I remember in the old days, one could record directly from the tv to a DVD recorder, but everything is so technical now, I'm not sure what I can do anymore. Thanks in advance for your advice/recommendations.
