Iphone Pricing?

Like everyone, I'm patiently waiting for the iPhone 5 to come out. If I decide to get this, it would be my first iphone, Apple anything. My question is, when these new phones come out, do they normally have the price tag of $199/$299 (the current prices of the Iphone 4) or are the prices normally higher when they first come out and then drop? I ask, because I'm budgeting myself, but I may splurge on this version. I know the prices for the iphone 4 will come down, but I really don't like the look of it (too boxy). Seeing some the rumored "images" of the iPhone5, it looks like a combination of the 3GS and the 4 (sleek). (crossing fingers)

Also, how is the call quality and gps system on these phones? I'm with AT&T, in the NY area. I need something that is crisp and clear in case my college students call regarding assignments. Thanks again.
