Ipad three and four! Do I really need them?

I thought ipad 3 was the newest but it seems there now is ipad4. I had ipad1 and gave it to my daughter for her son to use, when I got ipad2. The ipad1 now will not download updates. I am wondering if my ipad2 will have this problem soon. Is it really worth buying every new ipad they come out with? I am older and retired so do not have professional need of an ipad.
