I'm unsure at this point if you can directly update from El Capitan to High Sierra when it's released or if you'll need to upgrade to Sierra first. Sometimes you can skip, because they'll include the last upgrade in the bundle and sometimes you can't. I did try googling it and only saw speculation not confirmation but I'm kind of busy right now so I didn't look hard.
If you have time, you can always just upgrade to Sierra in the next few days or the next week or two and then install High Sierra. I can see that it would be tedious to deal with 8 years of updates in such a short period of time. So you might want to spread it out a little bit.
