IPad help pleae

I have and love my IPad. However, I teach and have Microsoft documents and PowerPoint lecture galore on my PC at work or on thumb drives. How can I get them onto the IPad for safe keeping? Can I edit these lectures on my IPad then transfer them back to my computer at work or my thumb drive? Thanks
