It's not really an Apple problem. It's a problem of people not carefully backing up everything correctly and carefully.

She said she has done that, using her friends' phones, but that her information is not there. It makes sense to me that it should still be there and I'm wondering if somehow she deleted it coincidentally with the phone failing.
She needs to make sure she is signing on with her e mail and password etc, I can NOT get my cloud when I log on to my husbands computer.

If I remember some of our info is also set up in our Apple ID account to only allow certain devices to access it? I can't check right now but it seems like my account lists the authorized devices.

I signed onto my Apple account at iCloud.com. The upper right side has a help section. From what I read, if she didn't upload her photos to iCloud or photos streaming, she is out of luck. It's not something that is automatic. If she only had her photos stored on her phone, they're gone.

True if she did not sync her phone the pics are gone with the wind - I have worked on Macs for years and switching to the iphone and syncing was easy for me. I am not sure this is even explained when you first get a phone

I never used Apple before I got my iPhone but to make it work the first thing was to connect it to iTunes and sync. The next thing I did was read how to back up everything. And it was easy.
I don't know why if people care about what's on their phone they don't make sure they know how to back up what's on it.

They should know exactly what the problem is, if it is saving to a cloud or accidentally deleting stuff. The Genius bar is the busiest part of THIS store. You should not have to use a friend's iphone to correct the problem.
The Genius Bar is not going to backup anything for you. In fact, there is a note on the Apple site that states if you take your product to the Genius Bar, make sure to back it up beforehand. They certainly will show you HOW to back up if you ask. But if you take a broken device to them for repair, as she did, they won't make a backup before trying to fix it.
Here is information from Apple website -

Does she have a mac computer? My photos from my iPhone are viewable via the cloud and downloadable to my iMac directly from the iPhoto app.
