It's your brother.  I'm sure he'd want to know if you're not happy with it.  I'd probably call him and tell him what you are hearing and see if he thinks you might be doing something incorrectly.  Or that it is, in fact, a dud.  Not sure I understand not being able to be upfront with your brother.  Sounds like you both have a great relationship.

@Krimpette

We do have a very loving relationship and I know he wouldn't be angry or anything like that.  He could be embarrassed though, because he has so much experience with these products.

I'm the last person to ask about electronics but I've always tried to match products.   Right now I have a Sony TV and a Sony surround-sound.    Works very well, been about 6 years now.

Good for you!  I get Consumer Reports and Sony is always rated very high in electronics.  I would buy an LG or a Sony in anything.  Just don't have an issue with this particular component rated.  Guess I could go online, but lately I'm a little leery of putting my info out there anymore.

I would probably get one of my own choice and unhook the one he gave me and only hook it back up if he was coming to visit. As soon as he was out the door going back home I'd do the switch again.

Re: I hate situations like this . . . !!!

I tried a soundbar for our Samsung TV and I absolutely hated it for the same reasons you state @LilacTree. Ended up taking it back to Costco and now we just use the sound from the TV.

If the original sound system you had for all those years was fine, I wonder what made it go sideways now, or if the Comcast guy was just looking to give you an answer so you'd have a conclusion to your problem.

Isn't it sad that the TVs now are big and HD. The picture is beautiful. But the sound stinks. And you have to go out a buy a sound bar .

@sandraskates

I thought of that too . . . and for that reason I'm keeping it until I have an opportunity to try it on another TV.

@drizzellla

Ridiculous, isn't it?!!

The manufacturer that finally puts a good sound system into these huge TVs will surely reap huge financial benefits!!  One of them will do it sooner or later.

During a problem I was having with my cable TV, Comcast came out and told me it was the sound system I was using that was incompatible with my TV.  It had been working for several years, but he insisted it was broken.  So I had to go back to the regular TV sound system, which has always been awful.

I mentioned it to my brother (who had worked as a salesman/seminar instructor at Panasonic for 36 years all over the world).  I asked him to recommend a sound system for me.  Instead he sent me a new one and then insisted on paying for it!!  Unfortunately, it is not rated very highly, and the remote, particularly, is just awful.  I am so surprised because he was such an expert in the field for so long.

I don't want to hurt my brother's feelings by sending it back, but I have spent hours online today trying to find at least a decent remote, but none of the "universal" remotes seem to be compatible with this brand, and during my searches, I read a lot of bad reviews about this system.

I don't know what to do!!  Help!

I wouldn't believe anything an employee from Comcast told me.  It's extremely rare for a sound system to go bad.  You didn't elaborate in your post whether you were having sound problems or not.  If you were having probmes with the sound, did you try a new cable before ditching it for a new system?

Re: I hate situations like this . . . !!!

My newest TV is a smart TV.  I have not added any sound bar or any such device to it or any of my other TVs.  I'm not much of a purist as far as sound is concerned, so whatever they provide has been fine for me.  I don't even notice.
