@sidsmom.  They use some of those taxes and fee to subsidise phone for those who don't have them or can't afford them.  Probably use donated or refurbished phones.  I've read of such a program for Navajo Indians who have no landlines.

@Kachina624

Thanks for the further explanation.

We see 'good people' do bad things all the time.

Good things which on the surface are innocent but in hindsight,

the signs were there.  That's where my 'Tiger Mom' comes in

play...especially with this forum. Y'all are my online friends.
And the questions/concerns come from a good place, I promise.

@Mz iMac

That is a very nice service.

I'd be interested in how you text from your desktop.   I have an iPhone and can text from there but like you said I hate typing on that little thing.  I also have a macbook air so I do my texting from there and it sync's with my phone.   But I'd love to get rid of the laptop and get a chromebook.  I don't want to lose the ability to text from the macbook and have it sync with the phone.   So, I'm wondering how you text from your desktop.  TIA

@Bridgegal  By using the Message app that comes preinstalled on all Macs.  It's inside your Applications folder.  If it's not there check your Utilities folder.

That's so cool @Mz iMac   It's good to have a cell phone on you even if you don't expect to talk on it too much.  Never know when you may need to make an emergency call.

[ Edited ]

There are 2 *free* cell phone programs available to lower-income folks as well.

Theres ASSURANCE wireless (by Virgin Mobile) which provides a smartphone and minutes.....(not sure of amount).

Then there’s SAFELINK wireless (provided by tracphones service), which

sends 1000-minutes monthly. (no roll over).  I think.

Anyway, if you know anyone who could use a cell phone (the ASSURANCE

phone I saw was a full sized smart phone, blue in color),

its worth checking out each website.

Only ONE PHONE per applicant. (either/or, not both).

If you have WIFI,  the smartphones can use that and not deduct ANY MINUTES.

Hope this helps.

ETA: this program originally began under Bush, but gained widespread

popularity as time went by.

Also, there is no *Yearly Fee* or fees of any kind.

Nice! That exact phone sells for about $100 at Verizon. The reason I know is because my husband needed a new phone and that is what he wanted. (yikes). I've had a smartphone since 2010, but he won't get one. Smiley Happy  Enjoy your new phone.

Re: 😲 I got a FREE flip phone 😲

What a nice gift, glad the police are looking out for seniors.

Please don't be like my MIL who has a flip phone but it is always in her purse and turned off.  Drives us crazy, every time she takes it out of her purse it is turned off or the battery is dead.  Or if she calls us on it she doesn't answer it when we call back.

I would recommend keeping the GPS loaded, never know when a family member may need to locate you.

DH took MIL to Sams this week to trade in her Flip phone for a new Flip phone.  The guy told her he had no idea how they worked and chances are she won't be able to get a new one in a year if she actually needed to.
