I Pad Not Backed Up?

My battery is probably at 18 % and I just turned it on and got a message saying that it hasn't been backed up, is it because the battery is low or do I need to do something? I read that your supposed to let the battery "empty" once a month to make it last longer. Just how low do I need to let it get?
