hickynut, where did you find this deal? Everyone, I really appreciate all of your suggestions. You are helping me so much. Please don't apologize for the Canon suggestion, it's great to find out this information.

I have found if you put an item on your wish list, the price drops the next time you view it. I also got my Canon printer from Amazon and $69.00 on sale. It was on my wish list and I got an e-mail telling me it was on sale.

I'm not hckynut, but Amazon sells many types of replacement ink from multiple vendors with lots of reviews of how the ink works in different printers. What I did was head to Amazon, Shop By Department/Electronics and Computers/Printers and Ink then click on Inkjet Printer Ink at the top, then click on "Compatible" on the left and lots of inks that are compatible with various printers will appear. Nearly all of them have dozens if not hundreds of reviews and then once you find a reliable, cheap ink, find a printer to fit it. If you already have a printer then that's the place to look for a good compatible ink for it. The prices there are pretty darn impressive and with hundreds of reviews you stand a good chance of getting a good product.

I'm with dooBdoo about using generic or refilled ink cartridges. I've seen too many people ruin perfectly good printers this way.

But then my printers are just home printers, so the cost for OEM cartridges is just not that great for home printing, as I might need to replace one or another of them every 6-10 months at the most. I tend to buy the XL or XXL cartridges because they are comparatively VERY inexpensive.

I watch the prices on the cartridges that go with my printers and buy them when they are the cheapest, so I always keep one spare set on hand.

Different online retailers. I shop around for the one that has the best price and I know to be a reputable company. Always seems to be a different one when it comes time for me to buy ink tanks. I've had "tank systems" since they first came out many years ago. Epson was the first company I saw that went to this type of system.

Now with the Epson I liked the tank system but the printer left a lot to be desire. Once Canon came out with the ink tanks I've bought no other brand since. And yes, all of the Canons have been either 4 or 5 tank systems.

We have had HP, Lexmark, and presently have Canons. One of the Canons is wireless, the other is not. If we needed to replace one, it would be with another Canon. The wireless was less than $100--can't remember the price of the other one. Have had both for several years without any problems (knock on wood). I was a teacher before I retired and did ALOT of printing. I also create iron on transfers for t-shirts and tote bags and these turn out great, too.

Again, another vote for Canon.

I have owned many printers. Now I only buy HP. I find it's cheaper to just get a new printer than it is to get the cartridges. Often HSN has them for around $80 or so, free shipping.

Right now I have two hooked up and 2 spare. One of the spare is fax and does everything. The other one is wireless printer, etc.

It may be cheaper but, what do you do with the old printers? I hope you either recycle or donate them.

I wound up buying an Epson 3540. I just couldn't take the indecision anymore, so I went for the one with the least amount of complaints about break downs after warranty and that has the features I need. Thanks to each and every one of you for your suggestions.

You buy new printers instead of new ink? This seems environmentally wasteful imho.Smiley Sad
