Now that I think about it, I don't know where he takes them. But I will always always always pull out the hard drive before getting rid of it.
I still have hard drives from every computer I've had. That's the hard part - what to do with them. If you have the means, smashing them to bits is a good choice, though! ![]()

There is absolutely NO reason to smash a hard drive. Take it out, put it into an inexpensive external enclosure and use it to transfer your data to the new computer. Once competed, format it and use it for backups or storage.

I'm not tech savvy, so how does one remove and/or destroy the hard drive?

Depending on the computer removing the hard drive is pretty fast and easy. Most desktop computers will either use a few screws or a locking mechanism of some sort to hold the hard drive in place. There will be a power cord and a data cord that you'll simply unplug. On laptops, things can get more complicated, but it's still doable. YouTube is your friend. Just do a search for removing the hard drive and you'll be good.

They have to be recycled, you can't put them with the regular trash. Look at your towns website. I recently had to get rid of a broken TV for my mother. I looked on her towns webpage and found out the transfer station that accepts trash also takes electronic recyclables.
