Re: How do you get rid of popups with no X button?

@dooBdoo, Hi and thanks for your suggestions.  I will try them the next time the popup happens.

And the strange thing is I am usually on a website I have visited before with no problem.  I searched around and others had the same issue but I did not find a solution.

Again thanks. You are always so helpful.

You're welcome, @ Montana, and thanks for the kind words.Smiley  It's a known issue, but the problem lies in a few websites with "rogue" code that tries to hijack the user and get you to click their link and provide information to them.  The bad news is that so far these are exceptions and the iOS doesn't block all of them.  The good news is that even though it's a nuisance, it causes no harm to you or your device if you just close it out and clear cookies/cache/website data in the Safari settings.

(I believe the ones @ChynnaBlue is referencing are the pop-ups asking things like "enter your email address to receive our newsletter" -- those you can manage, because they don't freeze the device or require you to tap and go to an unwanted website.)

@dooBdoo, I have never received the type @ChynnaBlue is talking about.  It has always been the "trap-you" kind.

I have a few questions: when you say close out my device, do you mean go back to the home screen and into Safari settings from there? Or do you mean, power down, reboot and then go to Safari settings.

Also, will clearing out cookies and history affect any websites I usually go to or iCloud backups?  I ask, because I don't understand the message when you click on the clear history button.

@ Montana, I really just meant "close out" in general...  whether the double-tap of the home button works or if you have to do a reboot.

I use the "Clear History and Website Data" frequently -- at least once a day and sometimes several times a day.  It removes temporary storage.  Your login info is stored elsewhere in more permanent storage which is not affected by this "Clear History and Website Data" function.  (And it doesn't affect your backups.)  To see what I mean by the permanent storage of login info, go into Settings, and choose Safari.  Then tap "Passwords" and enter your passcode.  That login data is completely unaffected when you clear the other things from the browser.

(You know the pop-up that appears on your iPad when you register on a website, and it asks if you want to save the user ID and password?  That's what tells Safari to save the info.)

hth!  I'm never sure if I explain things clearly.
