I need to download a FREE Excel spreadsheet on my laptop. Is there any such thing, and where do I go to download that's safe?

I just want it on my laptop, not something to use online and others can see it.

Do you have Microsoft office on your computer? If so it's built in. If not, it may not work without the program.

@Sunshine Kate @If you want an Excel type of spreadsheet that's free for your laptop and to use, go to the google store and get Google Sheets. It's free and there are versions for all the devices. I have it on my iPad and have it on both my Apple and non Apple devices.
There's also a free app on the Apple App Store called Numbers. I have it on my iPad. It does spreadsheets. I don't know if it will work with non Apple devices.

Excel isn't free. There are ways to view an Excell spreadsheet without the program. If you have an Apple computer, you can download it and open it with your Numbers program but, the will be formatting problems. They are not 100% compatible. There is a free Excel viewer program you can download. Do a Google search for it.

If you are used to Excel and have used it extensively, than Numbers or Sheets are very poor substitutes. They are for beginners or simple tables.

Would ask why the sudden need? Is someone sharing a spreadsheet you need to open? Can usually import with slight loss of function for a one off use.

Usually we know if we need Excel and we will pay.

Perhaps if you provided additional information as to what you need, we can help. There are free Office compatible programs you can download, at least they were free the last time I looked, which will allow you to view or use the spreadsheet. Open Office and Libre Office are two I've used. If something in your life has changed and you need to create, read or modify Excel documents on a regular basis, you may need to pay for the program.
