My dhs email was disconnected from the internet and he needs his password to set it back up. Any ideas on how to figure out a password for an email account?
He is pretty tech impaired..

Have him go to his email address and try to log in in.
When it asks for his password, he'll see an option "forgot your password?", it'll offer him a chance to "change/reset his password".

Yes @KingstonsMom is right. It happens. Just be sure to instantly change their password to one of his choice.

I have had times when going to "forgot password" is the same as "change password". Thus "enter old password" pops up, huh? Didn't/doesn't make much sense or help. Ever run into that?
I send myself all my passwords and store them in my email. Backed up on external drive and rewritable CD. So far so good, bug one never knows. Been around electronic tech long enough to find that out the hard way.

Handy Hint: I keep all my passwords (dozens!) in a pad of paper, which I keep in my desk. Sorted alphabetically by name of website. Low tech!

@sydsgma1,
Some devices, browsers, software save our login data.
It would help to know what kind of device and how he accesses his mail, just a few details.
His login credentials might have been saved in the browser(s) on the device for the email address website domain. When we log into any site and answer "yes" to the question about whether we want our username and password saved, the information usually is saved on the browser, used later for autofill.
(To see how to find your browser's "password manager" saved logins used for autofill, just do an internet search for something like "how to view my saved logins" and add the browser name, like Chrome, IE, Edge, Firefox, Safari, etc.)
iPads and iPhones save login info in Settings under "Passwords & Accounts."
If he uses Apple devices, his password might be saved in the "Keychain."
Best wishes to your husband for a quick and simple resolution.🌻

@sydsgma1 I couldn't access an email account several years ago. Once I got hold of tech support I had to tell them what was in my email folders so they knew it was my account. They reset my password so I could logon and change it to something I wanted.
Many emails now have secondary contact emails set up so you can recover your account that way. If you try to logon and send a password reset to the account you are locked out of it does you no good.
If he doesn't have a secondary email associated with this account, reach out to tech support and see what they can do.

I have a notebook that I write all ID's and passwords in. It comes in very handy.
