So I have a relatively new HP Pavilion 15t-200n Win 7 64 bit.

Used once a week and bought in July directly from HP.

Ran a disk imaging program last night and it says there is a memory error on the PC. It is the old Norton Ghost SW.

Ran HP tool kit and memory is failing.

I have a 3 year in home warranty that I purchased that HP refused to honor. Fought with them on the phone for 2 hours.

HP has a cool tool where you can see all your HW components including manufacturer, serial number etc. Turns out I have a 4GB memory card and an 8GB memory card. HP can't tell which one is failing.

They are sending me an 8GB card ... with the theory that if it is the 8GB card that is broken I still have 12GB and if it is the 4 GB card then the PC will be upgraded to 16GB.

I can't find any documentation that shows this PC can support 16GB.

Any suggestions? What if the memory is too large for the PC?

Just found the manual on line ... PC is max 12GB .... 1 4GB+18GB.

What happens if we install 16GB of memory.

Nothing will happen if the motherboard can handle 16GB of memory and they don't need to be installed in pairs. Unless you are using the computer for graphic intense games or video editing, you'll never need 16 GB.

Installing memory is easy. Are you planning on doing this yourself?

16gb is overkill.....

I would never recommend the OP go out and BUY 16gb of RAM, but if they're sending them for free and it will fix the issue, I see no problem. The extra RAM just goes unused, it won't harm anything.

After much searching the PC is only set up to handle 12gb Ram. I posted on the HP forum site and the experts told me not to install 16gb as they were not sure what would happen.

Escalated continually on the HP support site ... I bought this PC directly through HP ... with a 3 year onsite repair.

HP did finally agree to send a correct 8gb and 4gb chip ... and scheduled a repairman to fix my PC.
