Everyone who has windows 8 and below will have to upgrade to windows 8.1 by next year. Microsoft will not be supporting windows 8 anymore. I do not know about windows 7? Technology does not go backwards it goes forwards not completely sure if windows 7 will be compatible with the new downloaded version. Good luck! My boss tried to go back to windows 7 and was very unsuccessful with some of her applications not working correctly. And her computer crashing.

And windows 8.1 is very similar. And for people that do not like the tiles they can use the desktop. I do not see what is the big deal is either. And they are already working on windows 9 or 10 with gesture control.

I bought a new desktop shortly after Windows 8 came out. I had heard so many negative reviews about it that I paid extra to get Windows 7 on the new computer.

It is for me. That's all that matters, isn't it? I don't like any of the handheld little techie things that play movies, music, and games and don't own any of them. I don't even like my cell phone and use it only because my kids text me and I have to text them back.Win 8/8.1 is more geared to finger waving and all of that "easy to use" stuff for kids and individuals who didn't learn DOS and computering from the ground up. I'm used to what I'm used to and had no idea Win 8/8.1 would be so different. So call me dumb or whatever comes next.
What's wrong with a 76 year old woman wanting the product she is comfortable with? I don't like Win 8/8.1. Period. End of report.
Nothing is wrong with it but, with reverting back to windows 7. Those applications might not be compatible with what you want to do.[ you will be doing thousands and thousands of updates to catch up] Since Microsoft is not going to support windows 8 after 2015. Technology goes forward not backward. No use stressing you are certainly not dumb but , it is what it is.

He had XP on his old laptop and is very un-savvy on computer technology, although he loves his Droid smart phone. So we bought a Dell 15" Inspiron laptop, fully customized to our needs, for about $600 directly on the Dell site.
One key issue for me was the inclusion with Win 7 of Windows Media Player-- which I use for a large collection of music and videos and ripping from my own CDs and burning backup copies. I understand with Win 8 you have to purchase an app for a completely different media player software operation. No thanks.
DH is having some difficulties making the transition from XP to Win 7 and I occasionally hear some expletives coming from his home office... LOL... But I can just imagine the fussilade of language I'd be hearing if he had to cope with Windows 8!
My own Dell Inspiron laptop, running Vista, is still going strong after a bit over five years. I've never had any issues but I did have a tech upgrade the memory for more storage.
Microsoft always makes changes in new versions of Windows. We (I) find substitutions for these changes. The thing about Window 8.1 is getting started. Microsoft has help online.

All I do is write, so I use Word 2007. And I have a couple of spreadsheets I keep up on, so I use Excel 2007. I import photos and go online. I use Outlook 2007 for my email. That's it. Windows 7 will always be enough for me. I can't imagine any Microsoft upgrades not having the ability to read Windows 7 products for a very, very long time. Longer than I'll need it, I'm sure.

Classic Shell has been suggested numerous times for those who don't like the tiles. It makes your Windows 8 computer look like Windows 7.
My Windows 8.1 computer boots to the desktop without Classic Shell since I downloaded and installed the latest update.

If you use a smart phone device then you should be used to the touch screen, tiles whatever else. What the difference?
