I did get one from Dell directly. I posted elsewhere it is an XPS 8700, 1 tb HD, WINDOWS 7, 8 mb ram, i7 processor. It was the top of the line offered. I'm still awaiting the monitor because CPU and monitor were shipped separately and monitor had been damaged and was defective. It's supposed to come tomorrow.
I am giving my laptop to my grandchildren. They're probably already Windows 8/8.1 experts, but my life expectancy is shorter than theirs and I don't want to spend it trying to figure out that hideous OS.

What's there to figure out? Windows 8 is not complicated.

It is for me. That's all that matters, isn't it? I don't like any of the handheld little techie things that play movies, music, and games and don't own any of them. I don't even like my cell phone and use it only because my kids text me and I have to text them back.
Win 8/8.1 is more geared to finger waving and all of that "easy to use" stuff for kids and individuals who didn't learn DOS and computering from the ground up. I'm used to what I'm used to and had no idea Win 8/8.1 would be so different. So call me dumb or whatever comes next.
What's wrong with a 76 year old woman wanting the product she is comfortable with? I don't like Win 8/8.1. Period. End of report.

Omigosh. So gratified to see that so many others hate "8" as much as I do! I'm not a big computer person anyway -- just use it for email, FB, shopping, chatting, looking things up, and occasionally type a letter or something. I knew how to use XP and 7 and can't believe how convoluted and illogical 8 is. Can't find anything, makes things hard to organize and hard to work with. DH gave me a new laptop last Christmas, and I've hated "8" since Day One.

Agree. There's nothing "intuitive" about it. The screen changes whenever it wants to, files go . . . where? And Windows Explorer . . . my way of organizing everything on my computer, doesn't even make sense anymore. You click on one thing and get another. Try to grab a block of data and put it in a folder . . . easiest thing in the world to do. It won't do it.
No way. I am done.
(((Goodstuff))) Thanks!

Just thought I'd let everyone know that I have been set up with my Dell XPS 8700 for almost two weeks now, fully equipped with Windows 7, i7 processor, 8 mb RAM, 1 tb hard drive, and MS Office 2007! Everything works!! My printer (which was a nightmare with Windows 8.1) is working beautifully now, and most important, I am set up exactly as I want to be set up. I gave my laptop to one of my daughters who has two young daughters who are having no problems with Windows 8.1 so far. They are using it for schoolwork.
I am truly in Hog Heaven!! I love working with my computer again!!
I do want to thank all of you who tried to help me through this "electronic crisis" though. I do really appreciate it.

All I can say is I have almost 35 years of computer knowledge and experience. I ran an entire network with two servers and 36 workstations for 24 years, starting out with a DOS platform and ending up using Windows XP, which was the best OS they ever made. Of course by now technology has gotten far beyond that, which was ten years ago. I always had a computer at home though and kept up with the operating systems until Win 8/8.1.
I tried for eight full months to get used to Win 8/8.1, bought the "Dummies" book and read it cover to cover . . . and still could not make any sense of Win 8/8.1. So I gave up.
I hope she has the patience to see it through. I would say if she keeps to simple things, she might wind up fine with it. But I like to organize my computer, and I found that impossible to do with Win 8/8.1. I think those who already have iPods and iPads and that kind of technology will have less of a problem because Win 8 was originally designed for those kinds of products until they decided to get more bang for the buck and make a computer OS out of it.
Best of luck to your neighbor.

When my DH's laptop died a few months ago we decided, after much research, that under no circumstances would we buy anything with a win. 8 operating system. He had XP on his old laptop and is very un-savvy on computer technology, although he loves his Droid smart phone. So we bought a Dell 15" Inspiron laptop, fully customized to our needs, for about $600 directly on the Dell site.
One key issue for me was the inclusion with Win 7 of Windows Media Player-- which I use for a large collection of music and videos and ripping from my own CDs and burning backup copies. I understand with Win 8 you have to purchase an app for a completely different media player software operation. No thanks.
DH is having some difficulties making the transition from XP to Win 7 and I occasionally hear some expletives coming from his home office... LOL... But I can just imagine the fussilade of language I'd be hearing if he had to cope with Windows 8!
My own Dell Inspiron laptop, running Vista, is still going strong after a bit over five years. I've never had any issues but I did have a tech upgrade the memory for more storage.
