Hacking Answering Machines?

I must be way, way, way behind in technology! I've just learned that a person's home answering machine can be hacked into, and used for various reasons. Besides listening to someone's messages, the hacker can use your number to make long distance phone calls, and leave obscure messages on your machine for another hacker!

I am appauled at this. I NEVER EVER would've thought of anything like this! What else is out there, that we should all be aware of?

How can we possibly protect ourselves, when the bad guys are so far ahead of us? {#emotions_dlg.confused1}
