Christine, I'm notorious for writing way too long explanations on anything. After reading some of the comments for this HP Computer I recently purchased, one was exactly my problem/question. So, I'm borrowing it:

"I bought this because of the quad core, amount of RAM and all of the speed promises that came along with it. I also had wanted an HP to replace my Dell - WHAT a MISTAKE! Don't know if it's the HP or the Windows 8 Operating system but what a DISAPPOINTMENT! My lower, much lower operating system computer works better and faster than this one!

I'm not a super-user but definitely not a beginner either!

I've worked in Explorer and Chrome and both result in the same thing - SLOW access, pages freezing, kicking me out of pages, script errors, failure to access, takes me to ads that I didn't even know that I was going to.....AWFUL and frustrating! Not even media downloads just regular searches. So disappointed since I was so looking forward to this computer and it is way past the point of me being able to return it. My fault for delaying the opening!

Haven't figured out how to stop all of the pop-ups and ads - takes me to ads that I didn't even know I was near.....VERY Annoying!

Problems in mail too where it shuts down in the middle of composing an e-mail - losing everything that I wrote. I know that I need to get used to MS 2013 but I'm not liking that either....but perhaps will adjust to that in time.

Hate using this computer and wish I could return it....so sad!"

I don't know what to do about any of these issues. A main problem along with the rest of the above is the anti-virus program, Trend, is not working. We kept getting messages about how the computer was infected with a virus and to call Windows 8 immediately. Instead we went to the Trend software, and it said it was turned off. It would not turn back on. My husband deleted the program, and tried to reinstall, and could not. He went to system recovery back two weeks, and it automatically reinstalled with all the icons etc. However it does not work and we are currently without virus protection. I was under the impression the computer came with the Trend Anti-Virus program. But Trend is trying to charge us as new customers. I am over all these problems! Windows 8 is so unsatisfactory. I jut made the last payment, so it is only 6 mos. old. Can I return it?
