I have an HP Laptop Pavilion. It has a built in CD drive on the side. I use it daily to play my exercise videos. When I inserted a disc today, it seemed to keep trying to read the disc, over n over n over, but it just didn't recognize it. I tried cleaning the disc, inserting different discs, blowing the drive door for any dust, running the disc manually thru the program, etc...won't work.
When I go into the E drive, it doesn't list the name of the disc, as if it is unable to read anything in there. As far as I know I didn't have an update and it was fine yesterday. Anyone know anything about this? Thank you.

do you have another DVD you could try?
Sometimes just shutting down the computer and restarting it resets everything and then you could try again.

DH had the same issue with his HP laptop. But when he put the disc in my HP, same model as his, it worked.
He finally gave up and bought a new laptop.

@jellyBEAN If y0u use your dvd player daily, you should clean the drive at least once a month.
Go to your local electronic store and/or check online to purchase a disk drive cleaner CD. Those things works wonders on a DVD disk drive.
I personally use Disk Dr. Not sure if Best Buy still carries it.
EDIT: BB no longer carries the above. They now carry another laser lens cleaner brand.

Thank you for all your suggestions.
Yes, I did shut the PC down and restart - no difference.
I thought about buying a portable DVD player as a separate unit. I will try and buy the cleaning disc. I used to have one ages ago. Forgot all about those.
I am not up to buying a new PC right now. I hate change. I hate when things work fine one day and then completely on the fritz the next day. I am not a tekkie, just the basics for me so anytime things go awry, it really throws me for a loop.
Looks like I'm in for a trip to BB.

Now that I think of it, doesn't BB have The Geek Squad where you can get a quick diagnosis of what your problem might be? I know they used to have this service in-store, not sure if they still do. I guess I will check online and see if they have these things I'm thinking of.

You CD player has died. They are notorious for failing If your computer is otherwise a good computer, get a portable DVD/CD player to play your disks. Hook it up to your notebook computer and enjoy. I have an external DVD/CD player attached to my iMac to play my disks.
