This is good reading everyone.  mtc and gardenman, can you tell me what kind of antenna you have.  I'm so interested in getting rid of cable and going back to the "good ol' days of 'free tv'."

Thanks for your help.

Re: HBO Now is Coming to Amazon Fire

Hi LadyAmara, I have an Amazon Leaf Antenna and it works great for me (please use nutmeg3's link to make sure you purchase the proper antenna for your area as it is incredibly useful):

Finding the right antenna for your location, and a local guide based on your zipcode.http://antennaweb.org/

I am just done with dealing with the cable companies.  As long as I can find some programming that I would like to watch, that's fine with me.  I am so tired of fighting over the bill and service standards, enough!

I've gone through four antennas in the last year. I had a big old antenna that was around thirty years old and had lost many of the longer elements, so I was having a hard time getting WPVI-TV 6 from Philly. That station is still broadcasting on the old VHF channel 6 which complicates receiving it.

I then opted to go with a pair of antennas, one for channel six only (a VHF low antenna) and then a UHF only antenna for pretty much every other channel in my area. Well, the first VHF low antenna I opted for was a cheapie that could have worked for channel 6, but unfortunately didn't, so I removed that antenna and upgraded to a better one only to see no improvement in channel six. I then replaced all of the coaxial cabling and connections, added a signal amp,  a distribution amp, and channel 6 is still iffy at best. Word is that the digital signal from VHF low channel 6 is too close to the HD radio signals and the two signals will somehow bleed together making reception difficult. I'll go from no signal to a 95% stong signal only to have no signal a few minutes later. It's very annoying.

If I was starting from scratch I'd probably go with the little RCA ANT 751R antenna. It's under $40 at Amazon and people love it. It seems to be one of those rare, perfectly designed devices that works far better than it should. Add the coaxial cable, a grounding block and rod, and you'll be good to go.

mtc, thanks so much for your post and for nutmeg3's link.  I will definitely check that out after I post this, as well as the antenna you listed.  I agree with you that as long as I can find some programming, then it's well worh it.  Cable rates tend to jump at the end of each contract and I'm ready to just drop it all like I did several years ago.  I did keep the internet, but had no tv for about one year.  The break was nice.

gardenman, thanks for your post.  Seems like the work around was a bit of a journey for you but worked out well in the end.  Hopefully with everyone's info, my journey will fare easier.  I will also be checking into the antenna you recommend as well.  My favorite channel would be channel 9 in Chicago and will definitely be crossing my fingers on it.  If I can get that along with a few others, then there's definitely hope of me getting rid of cable.

nutmeg3, thanks for your posts.  I love pcmagazine's articles.  They break things down in plain English and are always very informative.  Will be reading that as well as soon as I post.   As for the good ol' days, I know I'm dreaming, but I'll do almost anything for another break from cable companies.  If my daughter was not living with me, I would have dropped cable in 2010, but I'm trying to find a comparable alternative that she might agree to.

Thanks again everyone.  My hunt is on and being a Prime Member, antenna shopping should be a breeze with your info.

Re: HBO Now is Coming to Amazon Fire

LadyAmara, I live in the western suburbs of Chicago (about 25-30 miles west of the city) and I get great reception with the Amazon Leaf antenna on a ton of channels including WGN (channel 9).

Re: HBO Now is Coming to Amazon Fire

How fun is this.  I have a new neighbor. Well hello neighbor!  I did get to read the information and reviews on the antennas that you and gardenman posted and had opted for the Leaf since I would prefer the indoor type (should have noted that earlier).

So, since you are about 25-30 miles west of Chicago and, according to the internet search I just did, I'm about 31 miles west by car (27 straight line) then the Leaf 35 mile range should be good, but perhaps the 50 mile range would prove better.  Which do you have?  Just wondering if the mile ranges may make for better reception since I also see there are amplified choices as well, but the reviews are about the same.

See you on our next post.

Re: HBO Now is Coming to Amazon Fire

Morning neighbor!  In hindsight, I wish I had picked the fifty mile range antenna because then we could probably pull in Indiana local stations too and I love local programming.  For the price difference, I wish I hadn't gone cheap on that.  I did not buy the amplified one, just the standard Leaf.

Did you see the post about TitanTV.com?  You can get your local programming channel guide which I was really hoping for.  It took me less than five minutes to set it up, very easy.

Hope you have a good day my friend (and neighbor)!
