I do too.  It bugs me.   It went away for a day or two, when the original 'free upgrade' offer ended.  Then they extended the offer and it came back on all my computers.  argh!   I think we are stuck with it for another year.  At least I was finally able to hide it in there but even when I first did that, every time I would start up a computer it came back to the forefront.  I would change it to 'hide' and it went back in the box until the next time I started the computer up again.

There should be a 'decline' option on the button and that would make it go away.  I guess they expect that people will change their minds.

I'm very glad that I spend a couple of weeks thinking about it and, since its launch, I'm REALLY glad that I decided against it.   I hope those who did the upgrade do well and are happy but I am still concerned, based on things I've been reading (not here).

@chickenbutt and @apple1964:

I have Windows 7Pro, but this is how I got rid of the "ad" to get the Win.10 upgrade:

  1. Open Task Scheduler (I couldn't find it readily so I went through the Help and Support screen. NOT Task Manager)
  2. Select Microsoft
  3. Select Windows
  4. Select Setup
  5. Select gwx
  6. Disable the 2 tasks in the gwx folder
  7. Reboot

I have a question on this.  I got all the way to 'select gwx' and then I'm lost.

Once I click on 'gwx' there is a tray to the upper right that has THREE items with 'gwx' in the name.   They are called 'refreshgwxconfig', 'refreshgwxconfigandcontent' and 'refreshgwxcontent' and then one item that is called 'launchtrayprocess'.

Which two items do you choose?

I didn't see any folders at all, so i don't even know if this is the right place.  Also, under 'gwx' on the left is another one called 'GWXtriggers'.

Do I sound like an idiot?  I feel like one, but then it's been a hard morning.  Smiley Happy

I went to the folder named gwx, and right clicked on the items in that folder and selected disable.

Perhaps I should have been more precise. I didn't "select" those names; I clicked on the + sign next to the names to expand until I reached the gwx folder. Then I went to the right area box and did as I said here.

I didn't touch the triggers file.

Edit:  Today being Windows Update Tuesday, there were 25 Windows updates to load on my computer. I thought maybe that Win10 icon would reappear, but it hasn't.

I subscribe to the daily free emails from Kim Komando, where I learn A LOT about misc. computer and smartphone issues. The steps I mentioned in my previous message, I got from one of her daily tips.

I tried just now to find the tip directly on her site, komando.com, and couldn't. However, I found the following, which apparently is a different way to deal with this issue.  This is the quote directly from her site:

I do know some people, however, who don't want Windows 10 and want that icon to go away. You can hide it by right-clicking on the taskbar and choosing Properties. Go to the Taskbar tab and under "Notification area," click the Customize button. Find the Windows 10 icon, and next to it select "Hide icon and Notifications" and then click the OK button.

If you want it off your computer completely, you'll need to uninstall a specific Windows update.

In Windows 8, using a mouse, right-click in the lower right corner of the screen and choose Control Panel. If you're using a touch screen, swipe from the right of the screen and tap Settings>>Control Panel. In Windows 7, go to Start>>Control Panel.

In Control Panel, click "System and Security" and then under Windows Update, click "View installed updates." Find update KB3035583, click on it and then click the "Uninstall" button toward to the top of the Windows Update screen.

I found the steps to hide, remove or disable the icon.

The GWX choice is a registry solution to the problem with icon.  Some people are not happy playing with the registry. The other suggestions work fine.

You may already know this, but you can run Windows 10 on your Mac since it allows dual booting into either OS X or Windows.  Here some info on installing it:

Thanks!  But, I did know this.  My husband offered to make a partition for me.  I just didn't want any Windows products "violating" my MAC, lol.

I have Windows 8.1 and in my taskbar there is a windows icon and a triangle symbol next to it, that says 'Show  hidden icons' when you hover your cursor over it. Click on that and it says 'customize' and click on that.

It will bring up your icons and you can adjust the icons and notifications on whichever

ones you want to hide.
