I was on my pc this morning playing Words With Friends via Facebook when this google chrome pop up popped up. I know not to trust this type of thing, so I closed the pop up and then did a virus scan. While running the scan, I grabbed my ipad and searched for info on this pop up. There was plenty of info out there but because I'm not a tech person I really didn't understand most of what I read.
I did see that apparently most virus scans and malware scans won't catch this. So what do I need to do to find out if this pop up has affected my pc? My pc operates with windows 10 and I have McAfee.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

@akaburtonfan, I cannot help you, but I too used Google Chrome as my search engine, a couple of weeks ago, something happened and Microsoft basically took over my computer, I can no longer use Google Chrome and it completely got rid of my Yahoo email acct. It was as if it became possessed, I know that sounds strange, but it truly happened!!!

@Hooty That would have freaked me out!!!

@akaburtonfan, it really did, my DH could not explain it, and he told a computer savy friend of his about it, and he said just don't use Yahoo! Luckily my Yahoo email was for junk emails!

Couple of things that might be helpful - Google Chrome is not a search engine. It is a browser.
As to the pop-up thing, I wouldn't trust it either. What I do is just check through Chrome itself for updates. That way I'm not following something I'm not sure of, rather going through the program directly. That's always a good way to go!
There have been nefarious things like this that claim to be updates for different programs and no doubt it will continue. Be safe! ![]()

@chickenbutt. I'm aware that google chrome is a browser -- I've been using it for quite a while. I just need to know if this pop up was able to put something on my pc even though all I did was close it.
I'm becoming really irritated with this type of stuff happening. May have to rethink how much time I spend on my computer. Grrrr
edited -- sorry chickenbutt just noticed that hooty refered to chrome as a search engine.

Oops, sorry I missed the boat on the actual question. Color me embarrassed.
I think that as long as you are able to get rid of it without clicking on anything in the body of it, you should be ok. Smart to run scans afterward, so you should be ok.
It seems like there is more and more of this type of thing. That's why I mention to always just go through a given program itself to check for updates and such.
One must be on their toes every minute, no? It's so easy to get burned with this stuff, I swear. I once went to put 'classic shell' on one of my computers. I googled it and chose the wrong thing. I almost loaded something from that wrong site before I realized it. YIKES! Scared the carp outta me.

@akaburtonfan@chickenbutt, Yes, I said search engine and I was wrong! What I did forget to say, after Microsoft took over my computer, I have to us Microsoft Edge as a Browser, and I do not like it!![]()

I haven't tried 'Edge' yet, but I did check it out once and didn't like it right away. That was probably a premature reaction but - oh well.
On my Win10 computer I use Chrome and IE for my browsers.
I do get the feeling that, with Win10, they really want you to use their new Edge browser because they seem to mess with IE sometimes. Over all, however, it seems to work fine as does Chrome.
I just don't care for Win10 for a variety of reasons. I find myself using either a Win7 or Win8.1 computer most of the time. The only bummer is that I really do like the laptop that has Win10 on it, a lot, just don't like the OS. ![]()
