One of the perks for keeping AOL is free MacAfee. If you don't have virus protection, that might be worth keeping. Beware if you go with gmail and you have kids! Our school district's filter blocks gmails, and parents complain all the time about unanswered messages. The reality is that the teachers never received the messages because they're blocked. Lots of local businesses around here block gmails.
Interesting. Why do they block gmail?

I am surprised that a school district would block Gmail, but they may have had a bad experience at some time.
One of the teacher trainers I worked with was a Google Certified educator, so our district uses lots of Google services -- all students have a Google account which includes an email address, access to Google Docs thru the secure district Google account, calendar, Google Drive, etc.

I have Yahoo and GMail. No problems with either. It's good to have two email providers in case one goes down. Luckily, I've not encountered any down times when I needed to use them.

I actually like AOL the best, although I know it's considered old-fashioned. I don't care!
I have had AOL since 1993, so it would be a change! AOL has been acting up lately, so it is time to change.
I've rarely had a problem with AOL itself, but there was a period of time when their CS was pretty bad. It's improved a lot, though, so I'm sticking with them.
I have several email accounts, all used for different purposes. AOL has been my main one from the beginning, and will continue to be until I have a good reason to change.
I'm sorry it's been acting up for you. :-(
Thanks. It gets annoying after a while. I may need to call them to see if they can help straighten it out. Maybe it isn't even their fault, but the browser keeps crashing. I don't have that problem when I use Firefox. Perhaps I'll continue to use it on Firefox and get rid of AOL Desktop.
That happened to me too, finally had to take the version OFF my PC completley because it was taking forever to load and update, so I sign on to AOL through Internet EXplorer. AOL, is half in n half out.

With Earthlink, I can only get their dial-up or satellite. I live in the country, across a river from a small town. We can't even get natural gas! So, I am very limited. Fortunately, I get my internet from a signal off of a tower a couple of miles away. AOL was my internet source until 18 months ago.

Good idea! Are you able to keep your "favorite places" and your mail folders?

Gmail because they separate your mail onto three pages, important, social, and promotions.

We've asked why they block gmail, and the answer is that it makes the network susceptible to viruses. Our district's IT Director is not a fan of the Google accounts for students. If teachers have a gmail account, they can't access it on campus because it's blocked. Not sure why local businesses block it. . .maybe it's because they're blocking because they've heard the schools are blocking. When I attend technology conferences outside of our district, I hear that many districts have gmail and others are like ours. It's difficult explaining to parents why we never responded to their gmails. We tell them at the beginning of the year that these are difficult to access, but they send them anyway and act like the teachers are avoiding them on purpose. ![]()
