Getting ready to ditch the dish

$89 a month is just too big a hit to the budget when we only watch a fraction of the channels available. We got ourselves an actual antennae so that we can get our local channels (I need to be able to see local news and weather). We just discovered Apple TV and DH signed up for 3 months free (they send you the box for one TV free of charge). I think it's only $35 a month). They offer what we consider to be a decent set of channels. The only thing I'm not too keen on is not being able to tape something and watch it later. DH says I can go back 3 days to watch a program, so this will not be a deal breaker. Hoping we will be able to "ditch the dish" soon to save some money.

If you call Dish and tell them you are thinking about leaving, sometimes they will give you a deal to keep you.  Worth a try.

Re: Getting ready to ditch the dish

When I retired I called Dish up and told them I could not afford to spend that much money on watching television.  They advised me they have a basic plan and my total cost per month is $28.82.  At first it was hard to lose some of the channels but after a couple of weeks I completely forgot about those show!  I am so glad I called and you could call customer service if that would be of interest to you.  Plus that includes having the DVR for recording.

I know many people that are doing the same thing.  Most I know are getting Hulu to see current series on tv @ $ 7.99 a month and use Amazon, because many series and movies are free if you have prime.  Our cable bill is $230 a month and like you still need an option for local news .

Re: Getting ready to ditch the dish

My DirecTV bill went up to $150 per month. The second I saw this "new rate" I called them and asked them if they could do better since I have been a loyal customer for over fifteen years. They got my bill down to $100 per month and told me the price was good for one year only and to give them a call back when the time comes. They said they can usually work out another new deal but likely not keep the low rate but a competitive one.
