Geeksquad VS local repair guy?

[ Edited ]

Hi all, recently i accidentally installed a virus on my imac computer (pop-ups, crashes, the whole shebangCat Sad).

I want to get it repaired, but I'm in quite the pickle. I've never had a virus removed from my computer. Woman Frustrated

Im wondering:

who is the better choice for virus removal? (generally speaking), Geeksquad or a local repair shop?

Both of them are ~40mintues away, but I'm just not sure who I should go to.

@agneslynn   Download the app Malwarebytes.  IF your iMac is infected w/malware it will find & get rid of it.

What you describe sounds different.  How large is your harddrive & how much storage do you have left.

Which model iMac do you have?

Which OS do you have?

I would rather take my stuff to an experienced electronics repair place than to Geek Squad. I'm not saying that GS is bad but I've heard, from people in the business, that they employ entry-level IT people who usually don't have extensive experience.

This was many years ago but late DH, who was extremely computer savvy, had a problem and called GS. They "fixed" whatever it was, a reasonable price and DH was pleased. Again, this was when GS was fairly new so I'm guessing things have possibly changed.

Install free Malwarebytes before taking it anywear. Let it scan. Maybe you'll have good luck. Easy to do.

@agneslynn

I forgot to add.......

If you have AppleCare AND since you have an iMac, you are entitled to Home repair.  An Apple tech will come to your house to repair your computer>>>>>FREE!

I would bring my Mac to the nearest Apple Retail Store.  I wouldn't let the "Geek Squad" touch it.

If your only Apple store is 150 miles away, go local.

Re: Geeksquad VS local repair guy?

Tough call.

Many years ago when we got our first computer or two, we had Geek Squad work on our computers. Sometimes it went well and sometimes we ended up buying a new computer.

Then my husband found a local computer repair guy. He did a great job fixing our troubles. Then he started hiring kids to do repair work. My husband was disappointed with the results sometimes.

We found another local repair shop. The guy has been in business many years. He was not able to fix or access any information on the computer.  And my husband ended up having to get a new computer.
