External hard drive question.

I have an external back up device with several years of information stored.  All of a sudden it will not back up...if I initialize it (which is the message appearing on the screen) does that mean all my infomation will be deleted when I initialize?

It is connected to my Imac...the machine is old and has never been connected to the internet...I am concerned about losing what is stored on the external back up...any advice?

thanks!

Initalizing it will wipe all the info

@I am still oxox , thanks! That was my worry.  Most things I did burn to a cd for safe keeping.  It lived a good long life I guess I will need to get another one.

Multiple backups is the key.

Re: External hard drive question.

@glb613 ....the external had been acting odd as I had to prompt it to back up on occasion...then all of a sudden it needed to be initialized...I didn't put two and two together until I wanted to search for a file...ugh....

I am glad that most of what I need is on a cd.
