As a rule you don't need them. I got an Echo the first year they were out and it's given me no trouble whatsoever. It's been knocked to the ground multiple times by a cat who thinks it's perfect for rubbing her head on and it's survived every fall.

By the way, I wouldn't be shocked to see a new Echo emerge in the near future. The recent sale on them here is often part of how Amazon starts to unload existing stock of a product before its replacement comes out. If the old Echo goes "out of stock" at Amazon anytime soon, it'll be an even clearer sign that a replacement is on the way.

Speak of the Devil. Amazon is taking orders for the new Echo Show, which will be released on June 28, 2017. This one has a screen, so now Alexa can show you what a wombat actually looks like! Woman LOL

It depends on what the item is, how long I expect to have it, and what it would cost to replace it.

I don't expect to, or particularly want to, keep smaller electronics more than three years. After that point the hardware won't keep up with how the device is ideally supposed to work; it will be outdated and probably unsatisfactory at that point.

If an item costs me $100 and a warranty costs me more than $10-$15, no.

If an item costs me $500-$1000, yes. Especially since items that once could be counted on to last for decades are now manufactured to kwap out after a few years.

On an iPad, iPhone or TV, absolutely. Too many things can, and do, go wrong. I've had two major brand LCD TVs just go "Pop to Black" on me after a few years. So whereas once I would have considered all extended warranties a waste of $$, I no longer do.

For an Echo, I personally wouldn't bother. They don't cost that much, and older models already don't do everything that newer models do so what's new and highly functional this month isn't in a year. Plus Amazon's CS is fabulous and you'd either get a refurb (as good as Apple's refurbs) or 30+% off a new one.

I had the same thing happen with two new tv after just a couple of years. I’m buying a new tv and I’ll be getting an extended warranty.

Same answer I have months ago. NO, they are a waste of money. Since my last reply I have bought a new 200 watt Receiver/Multi-CD player/A set of 5.1 Polk Surround Speakers and Subwoofer. No extended warranty and I doubt I will ever need one.

Some electronics are put in harms way by the ones that own them. Few read instructions on how to set up electronics from 1 of their big enemies, HEAT!  Others, such as one poster mentioned, drop cell phones. "hello"!

Few electronics wear out, they are either a lemon from the getgo, or are not properly taken care off by many that buy them. Why? You tell me!

Still have, and use, the same very old components I mentioned in my 1st reply to this, nary a hitch. Hey, if there are those that are worried, by all means, spend however many $$$$ you wish on extended warranties, those companies love ya!

Another "no" from me. The only time I ever bougjt one was whenI was negotiating the price of a vcr capable of frame by frame editing. The salesman offered me enough extra goodies that I felt it was worth it. That was the only reason. Never needed it. Nor did I on anything else I can think of. As others have said, if something is going to go wrong, it will usually do so during the manufacturer warranty period.

We purchase Apple Care with all of our computers.  Gives us peace of mind even if we don't use it.

I never get warranties.  My stuff always breaks one day after they're over.

My cc gives me an extended warrantee as part of the benefits so I don't buy it.

No.  Technology changes too quickly now.  I usually replace before it stops working.

I broke down and got the Amazon Echo today, but I was wondering if I should buy the 3 year extended warranty they have. Normally I don't because I take good care of my stuff and they last me (I still have my first generation Kindle!) for years. However, a 3 month old Vizio sound bar has been giving me headaches from day one, so I'm leery of getting another lemon.

Do you guys automatically get the extended warranty, or do you just skip it? Thanks.

@grammarqueen

I have never bought them.  They are usually very limited.  Read it in its entirety before you buy it at the cash register.
