Re: Don't buy discontinued computers!

@gardenman- Exactly!  That was my first thought about the OP's store experience.

I was also looking at the Q's available Microsoft Surface Pros and none of them have very high storage capacity, so I'm wondering if the OP expects more of that tablet than it can reasonably deliver.

Just a thought.

A sales hype thing they tend to throw in to boost the 'retail value'  is  technical support.  The support they provide  is the most basic advice- everything else is an upcharge. if you really want full  technical support sign up with a plan directly with  the manufacturer.

I'd be willing to bet the problem wasn't the CPU. Before I upgraded my computer I was still using a dual core, lower end, seven year old AMD processor and it plowed through everything (photo editing, word processing, simple games, web browsing, streaming videos, etc.) with no trouble. I very, very rarely came close to maxing it out. The vast majority of the time it would idle along at maybe ten percent use. I'm now using an AMD FX 6300 six core processor that I've had two years now and it was several years old tech when I bought it. The AMD  FX6300 came out in 2012, so it's been around a while. It's typically running between two and four percent while I type this up with the Edge web browser, Dashlane, two Word windows, and Outlook all up and running. CPU's are almost never the problem with a slow computer. This is anything but a state of the art CPU and it's plugging along nicely with no hiccups running Windows 10 and many modern programs. I was just using it for photo editing with Photoshop Elements 2019 and it had no issues at all.

Learning to use Task Manager is very helpful for any Windows user. It'll show you how much of the CPU and memory are being used and what's using them. Once you know what's using them you can shut down those processes and restore your computer's speed. It's something any tech should be able to do in his/her sleep. It's something that can prevent you being coerced into buying a computer with a "faster" CPU. If you know your CPU isn't close to being maxed out, then you'll know the staff is lying to you when they say a faster CPU will help.

A slow computer is almost never due to an inadequate CPU. The only real exceptions would be if you were doing video editing, high intensity gaming (more of a stress on the GPU even then than the CPU, but in some cases a slower CPU can be an issue) and that's about it. People get far too hung up on the stats and want the best and fastest, but it's like buying a Bugatti Veyron (a 250+ MPH car) to run back and forth to a neighbor's house. There are very, very few cases where the CPU is a problem, if the CPU is less than ten years old, it should handle any "normal" thing you throw at it with ease. If a clerk tries to tell you otherwise, they're trying to upsell you on something more expensive.

Just because something is brand-spanking new, with all the latest technology and bells n whistles doesn't mean that it's any better than something that is older. For me it's better to buy a well-reviewed, and sometimes refurbished, older computer than it is to buy one that is brand new and has little known stuff about it...and you just might end up with a lemon in that instance.

I'm sorry you had that experience.  QVC doesn't have the best options on electronics.  I must say that I have had a Surface for both personal and work use and love it.  As with everything you get what you pay for.

Re: Don't buy discontinued computers!

I have bought all but one of my computers over the years from QVC and have never had a problem.

You need to know what you are buying. Research the components. QVC has been selling some nice computers lately.

I think people look at the processor first, but if it only has 4 gbs of memory, then you are going to have a slow computer. The more memory, the more you can do before it bogs down.

If the price is good but the amount of memory is small, then research if memory can be added, because adding it is cheap.

For tablets, if you buy a 16gb storage tablet, it is going to be a turtle unless it has a port to add a micro SD card slot. You can add a bigger sd card to that slot and send all your music or pictures to the SD card and then they don't eat all your storage. SAME with phones for that matter. You buy an 8gb phone and you will be out of space before you add your contact list.

It all comes down to knowing what you want, what is in what you are buying, and will it fit what you want to do with it.

If you've never ordered any electronic device from a shopping channel, you have no firsthand knowledge of that.

However, not everyone needs or wants the "latest and greatest" and a previous model will suit his/her needs perfectly for far less money.

Again - do your research and then buy what you need, for the best price, regardless of the retailer. I have first hand knowledge I know people who have ordered from shopping channels FYI, I know what is old by reading and doing my own research.Do not assume you know anything about what I know about Computer devices. And just so you know a person can buy inexpensive more up to date devices. And they will be supportive with newer applications for a longer period of time.
