Don't buy discontinued computers!

For Christmas last year, I purchased a Microsoft Surface Pro w/ keyboard, pen and office, it was a gift for my husband. He often talked about how slow it was. In these last few months it has become completely unusable. We took it to the Microsoft store and  was told the processor was discontinued and it was one of their worst models. After they did a tune-up and update, the computer is still unusable. To salvage some of the $890 spent purchasing this computer we will have to trade it in for $200 bucks.

QVC needs to do a better job vetting the products being sold. I will never purchase any other electric from QVC.

One of the reason I stick with Apple products at the Apple store.  I'm sorry you had this experience.

Re: Don't buy discontinued computers!

It pays to do your own research before you buy.  I've always seen the specifications given for electronic items sold on QVC, including the processor, and I check them out.  You can tell if it's "last year's model".

And it isn't always the processor that causes slow response times.  It can be affected by what you have stored on the computer or if you've picked up a virus or malware, for example.

For me, I could have the greatest PC in the world and my download speed would still be cr*p, because of the lousy internet provider we have!  (And it's our only choice.)

Apple isn’t 100 percent perfect either.  By no means.

I never will order from any shopping channel a electronic device. The products are old and outdated and the software that comes with it a person will never need or use.

That is for sure.. I saw something on  utube last week that spoke volumes to me. The reason that Apple products are so expensive is not that they are so great it is because they  the Apple company have been losing money because most people do not want or could not afford the high cost of Apple products so people have been buying budget devices. Apple stock has been losing money so that is why there customers have been paying such a high cost. Very interesting video.

Re: Don't buy discontinued computers!

You can't always go by what people in the stores, or technicians, tell you. I'd be very, very surprised if the problem was truly the CPU. Unless you're using it for video editing, or very high end gaming, the CPU is typically not to blame for slow performance. Even the slowest modern CPU is blazingly fast compared to those from five or ten years ago. If you have ten programs open at once, then you might need a better CPU, but for "typical" users any CPU of the last ten years should be perfectly adequate.

As a general rule a slow computer is caused by something hogging resources. The Task Manager software will let you poke around and find the issue. A few years back a plug-in on my web browser would consume 90+% of the cpu on my desktop. Task Manager let me track down the culprit and fix the issue.

My suspicion is that the store was trying to upsell you a new computer by generously offering you $200 for a trade in, when there was nothing really wrong with your computer that a competent tech couldn't correct in five minutes time. They make more money selling you a new computer than they do fixing your old one (especially when there's nothing really wrong with the old one) so pushing you to buy new makes them more money. They can then fix the issue with the old one and quickly flip it for $300-$400 to make even more money.

Way too many people get hung up on having to have the latest and greatest CPU, but in the vast majority of cases, you don't need it. Some of the fastest computers out there these days are the Chromebooks which use very low-end CPU's, but a simplified operating system. If you want a system that maxes out every benchmark, then fine, splurge on a high-end CPU. But in the real world, the CPU is almost never the choke point on a slow computer. Pretty much any CPU will perform fine for the vast majority of users.

Electronics, cameras, kitchen appliances, you are right.

QVC sells the old stuff.    I figured it out after seeing too many discounted items, 10s of thousands sold in a day to see a couple of weeks down the road a new improved model.

If you've never ordered any electronic device from a shopping channel, you have no firsthand knowledge of that.

However, not everyone needs or wants the "latest and greatest" and a previous model will suit his/her needs perfectly for far less money.

Again - do your research and then buy what you need, for the best price, regardless of the retailer.
