Do you keep a back-up router/modem for your WiFi?

[ Edited ]

Do you have a spare in case the one you are using goes out? I was just wondering how many people have a spare. Last year I lost my router in an electrical storm (long story).  It was such a pain to get it replaced and took forever. I was without wi-fi for nearly two weeks before I could get a replacement sent. Now I'm thinking that I should buy another extra router to have as a back-up just in case. What do you think?

Has your router ever gone out? What did you do?

not sure I would,  as technology changes, there is the possibility you could be stuck using a router with outdated tech.  then, of course, you have invested the money in something you might not need.

It would only be a spare...a temporary one until I could get an updated router, if need be. @jackthebear

I don't own a cell phone so the only electronic access I have is through wi-fi and my phone is also VoIP.

Fortunately, I have a 30 year old son who installs and repairs all the 'techie' stuff I need.  So, it would only take a few minutes for him to set a new one up.  I would never buy a 'spare'.

No. My router was installed by AT&T when I switched from DSL to U-Verse. I'm not sure how I'd go about keeping a spare, even I wanted to. My back-up would be to either use my cell phone as a hot spot or use the data plan in my iPad.

But don't you still need a router to get a wi-fi signal to your iPad and cellphone? @FrostyBabe1

The equipment that AT&T installed (and owns) IS the router.

We do not have a spare. We lost our last modem during a storm a few months ago. And we had to get the replacement from Verizon. So it is compatible with Verizon. It was the first time a modem had to be replaced and it was sent right out. I think we got it the next day.

I don't rent my router from my isp. I bought the one I use instead. I had the option to buy one outright instead of having to pay a fee to use one of theirs.

You need a wi-fi signal from a router/modem for all of your devices to get to the internet. Without one then you have to find a hotspot somewhere else and use their access code.

If the one you are using goes out, couldn't you just go to Best Buy or somewhere that day and buy a temporary one?
