Re: Do you keep a back-up router/modem for your WiFi?

If the one you are using goes out, couldn't you just go to Best Buy or somewhere that day and buy a temporary one?

@NickNack,

I tried to find a compatible one in several stores here locally after my router went bad last year. No one had one and no one could help me find another brand that was compatible with my service. BestBuy told me to call my isp to get their advice and my isp told me they could send me another identical router in 7 to 10 working days...that's a long time to be without internet.

@SilleeMee

Our DSL internet service is outdated and it is difficult to find a modem/router combo also. I will be ordering a backup for the reasons you mentioned and we also have power surges.

Better to be prepared in my opinion. I live in a rural community and understand that the few stores we have do not carry the what we need.

no, depending on what time of the day it happened i can easily run to best buy and purchase a new one. if it happens at night i can just go the next day.

i have a smartphone and tablet and can access the internet for the period of time that i am without the home service.

No, I would not buy a backup. My internet provider supplies mine. If it goes out then I call and they will come replace it. The last time it took less than a week. It didn't bother me since I still could do anything I wanted from the smartphone.

No. My router was installed by AT&T when I switched from DSL to U-Verse. I'm not sure how I'd go about keeping a spare, even I wanted to. My back-up would be to either use my cell phone as a hot spot or use the data plan in my iPad.

But don't you still need a router to get a wi-fi signal to your iPad and cellphone? @FrostyBabe1

your phone can be a hot spot anywhere,  I use my iphone as a hotspot for my iPad when I am in the car, phone uses 4G or whatever it's getting

Yes, since I rely so heavily on my internet and wi-fi, I have both a spare modem and a spare router standing by in the closet in case one goes out.

Hint:  If you haven't already done so, get a high quality surge protector for your device.  They do work.

My house was struck by lightning last year. That bolt of lightning came into my house from underground. I lost all of my electronics! The electrician who inspected my house after the strike told me that no surge protector or lightning rod would have made any difference. I hope I never have to go through that again! Took me a while to get everything replaced or fixed...Smiley Tongue
