Re: Do I Need Virus Protection On My Kindle Fire 7

Smokey, Malwarebytes is more of a supplement to regular anti-virus software. I use it along with my security software, not in place of it. And I don't care what any article says, anything that uses the Internet should have anti-virus protection.

As far as ereaders vs tablet for reading, if you have any vision issues you'd see plainly the benefits of an ereader, which isn't backlit (shining a light directly into your eyes) like a tablet. Ereaders also have much better, easier on the eyes, text. If you don't have any vision issues, I'd use whatever you prefer. I use my ereader for reading books and I'm a total Kindle reading junky. I do prefer a tablet for magazines or heavily illustrated books like cookbooks.

@dhart  Thank you for the response.  I know you're right about having anti-virus software. I haven't dowloaded AVG yet, and actually I was trying to decide between AVG and Avast.  I'm leaning towards Avast.

As far as ereaders go, I don't notice much difference in the lighting of my Kindle Voyage to the Kindle Fire.  The Kindle Fire seems crisper to me (and I do have vision issues).  Even so, I usually read on my Voyage (because it's lighter).  I never read in the dark, and maybe that's why I don't notice much difference in the lighting between the two devices.

I appreciate that you took the time to let me know your thoughts on this.  Thanks!

Thanks to everyone for the responses.  After having the Kindle Fire 7 for a couple of weeks I'm finding that I use it mainly as an ereader and for the games.

@apple1964  In some ways I prefer the Fire to the Voyage as an ereader (go figure, the voyage was almost 4 times as much ).  For one thing, the book covers are in color and look more like real books.

I also got 6 months free of The Washington Post and find myself reading those articles quite a bit, but I don't think I'd pay for the subscription.

I also like that the Fire 7 came with Alexa,  but I took it on a trip recently and found that my smartphone was actually more useful (for maps, etc.).

Glad your enjoying the fire5 I love mine use it more then the Ipad2 and 3 that I have. Check out the "underground" application it has a lot of free games, books and music. God bless and have a good day!Smiley Happy

AVG and Avast are both good. I've used both on my PC and think either would be a good choice.

I think the Fire apps are free, so download one, try it out, delete it, download the other, try it out, then decide which one you want to keep based on which is easier to use.

Even if you only read books, you have an Amazon account with a password and linked credit card on the device, so virus protection is smart.

When my Washington Times expired they sent me an offer to get it for another 6 months for $1.00.
