I have a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series. Not sure how old it is 4/5 years or so. I unplugged it to use it in a different room and the battery light turned orange. Plugging it back in, it turned back to its normal white charging light, but once it hit 100% it went back to orange. I did a little research on Google, but only saw problems with having a blinking orange light. Mine is a steady orange light.
Any ideas? It's working fine otherwise.

@Mindy D Thank you, but doesn't "running on battery" mean it's not plugged in? Mine is plugged in and the battery says it's at 100%.

@KitTkat @I'm not sure. I found the service manual for your 5000 series online. See if this means anything.
Power and battery-status light/hard-drive activity light:Indicates the battery-charge status or the hard-drive activity.
Hard-drive activity light
Turns on when the computer reads from or writes to the hard drive.
Power and battery-status light
Indicates the power and battery-charge status.
Solid white – Power adapter is connected and the battery has more than 5 percent charge.
Amber – Computer is running on battery and the battery has less than 5 percent charge.
Off

@Mindy D I honestly have no clue, although I appreciate you looking this up for me. The battery said I had 3 hours of battery left when I had it unplugged. Plugging it back in, it charged up to 100%. I'm totally confused by this.

It's possible your power cord/power supply is not working.

Please backup your important files, photos and etc to the cloud or a hard drive.
A Google search of "my Inspiron 5000 has a light" will give you a solution.
You may want to post your concerns at Dell's customer to customer forum.

@KitTkat @Nuttmeg I'm also on a Dell laptop - for over a year now. But until a few months back, I'd never seen that light and had no idea what it meant when it came on. But as I do most always when there's a problem with any computer, I turned first to the connections. In my case, a connection had worked loose and my battery had nearly depleted itself while I wasn't watching. Unplugging and replugging that connection securely turned my light off.
But I'm glad to have read this whole thread so that now I know more about what's happening right before my eyes!
