It varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and model to model. Removing the battery if on AC power(not charging) was recommended for both of my HP notebook computers by the manufacturer. I can't remove the battery on my MacBook Pro so I won't when using it on AC power. You best bet is to go to the manufacturer's website, search for your model and see what is recommended.
