Changing my ringtone on my iPhone 4

I've had so many phones and so many ringtones and this is the first time I've every been confuddled. I downloaded a ringtone from iTunes. It's in my download file and my album file but I can't figure out how to change the overall ringtone for the phone. I can't make that tune show up in the list of options. I don't know if I'm making myself clear, but if anyone can offer help, I'd appreciate it.
